Dream Keeper Communications Workshop Series: Restoring Humanity in Marketing: Beyond Narrative Change with Precious J. Stroud

Restoring Humanity in Marketing: Beyond Narrative Change with Precious J. Stroud

Background

PJS Consultants works to restore humanity in marketing by designing and implementing transformative, truth-centered communications strategies that increase brand awareness and market leadership for our clients.

As a way to deepen connections and impact among changemakers across the communications field, PJS Consultants developed the Communications Changemakers Network to curate and host a diverse set of community workshops led by talented practitioners whose work aligns with the organization’s vision of restoring humanity in marketing.

Who Should Attend

All who want to represent the subjects of their communications materials with humanity, dignity, and respect. Team members from all departments are welcome to attend.

April Focus: Story-framing for Organizations Committed to Change

From the seasoned communications professional to the consultant designing a monthly newsletter, flier or blog, anyone responsible for communications tasks is in the position to center, affirm, and celebrate the experiences of the people at the center of our work through our writing, design, and communications. Organizations working for change have long defaulted to using status quo language that appeals to misguided thinking and bias confirmation. It’s critical that those of us in these positions have tools that support our ability to communicate on behalf of the people we serve. How can we elevate our thinking and hold our clients up in dignity and humanity instead of repurposing deficit-based language and imagery?

In PJS Consultants’ April session, you will learn how to assess your organization’s language landscape and use thoughtful, honest, and respectful language and images. We will discuss how and when to use language about community barriers so that we can define people first by their assets rather than their challenges. You will be guided through practical applications to ensure the narratives in your marketing and communications materials foster inclusivity.

Workshop Presenter

As founder at PJS Consultants, Precious J. Stroud leads a dynamic team of narrative change experts to design and implement marketing strategies for community-minded organizations to increase their impact and market leadership by telling the right stories at the right time. A former Black Public Media Artist-in-Residence and 2020 BMe Vanguard Fellow, Precious is committed to working toward a more caring and prosperous future, with a particular concern for the “Next Narrative for Black America.” Initially focused on Black Male Achievement narrative change through her work with Oakland Unified School District’s groundbreaking Office of African American Male Achievement, Precious —also an alumna of the Beloved Community Campaign for Black Male Achievement Fellowship—was awarded the distinguished honor of serving as a Diversity and Inclusion planning committee member for American Express Leadership Academy’s Alumni Global Summit. Precious is a leader in the field of asset-based marketing and communications as a tool for narrative change and social progress; she demonstrates through her work the power of replacing harmful deficit-based language with positively framed and future-focused alternatives.

In 2014, Precious founded BlackFemaleProject to illuminate and interrupt the patterns of systemic racism and sexism Black women experience in the workplace. A research-based effort, BlackFemaleProject brings together Black women from diverse backgrounds to connect and learn through their shared and varied experiences, and documents and publishes lessons learned and words of wisdom in order to promote healing and innovative leadership among Black women and those who love and support us.
